    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom April 25 to 27, the Ponds Forge Swimming Center in Sheffield hosted the 2008 British International Disability Swimming Championships. Amputee swimmers and swimmers with other disabilities from all over Europe and several other countries took part in the competition, including swimmers from New Zealand. The event - the third biggest swimming competition for disabled athletes after the World Championships and the Paralympic Games - this year also incorporated the Beijing Paralympic Games Trials.

The event was the first major international swimming competition of the year and yet an other chance for swimmers with a disability to prepare for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.   • Malmo Open 2008 Part 1 - 56 Photos

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETWhen the first Malmo Open for amputee athletes and athletes with other disabilities were organized in 1977, only 25 table tennis players took part in the event. Thanks to the determination of one of Sweden's largest sports associations for disabled athletes, the Föreningen idrott för handikappade (FIFH), and the help and support of the Malmö Municipality, the competition has grown over the years and has recently attracted more than 2000 participants competing in 14 different events.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom January 25 to 27, swimmers from all over France came to Saint Malo for the Championnat de France des Regions, the 2008 French Regional Swimming Champs for athletes with a disability. The competition was organized at the Piscine de Naye, the swimming complex close to the historical old city of Saint Malo. For most of the particispants the event was yet an other test for the Paralympic Games, which will be held in September in Beijing, China.   • Deventer 2008 - 80 Photos

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom January 18 to 20, the 2008 Double Dutch Open was held in Deventer, about an hour train ride from Rotterdam. Once again the main part of the competition was organized in the region's well-known recreation complex "De Scheg", which houses various wheelchair accessible sports facilities under one roof. The Double Dutch Open, which is held biennially, has attracted both disabled and non-disabled athletes from all over Europe for more than 10 years. When the event was initiated in 1993 by the Double Dutch Open Foundation it was originally planned as a swimming competition and first organized in the year of 1994. Due to the huge success the executive committee decided to expand the tournament with the inclusion of sitting volleyball and later wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.Nearly 200 disabled world class athletes from 18 nations took part in the IPC World Cup Disabled, held from January 5 to 11, 2008, in Abtenau, Austria.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETDuring the finals of the 2007 Amputee Football World Championships, the amputee soccer team of Uzbekistan beat the team of Russia with 2 : 1 and is new Amputee Football World Champion. The World Championship, which was held from November 11 to 21, 2007, was attended by Amputee Football players from Brazil, Sierra Leone, Russia, the Ukraine, England, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Iran, Liberia and France. The event was organized by the Turkish Sports Federation for Physically Disabled Athletes and the Turkish Football Federation and held in the soccer complex of the Topkapi Palace Hotel in the Southern Turkish city of Antalya. From the expected 12 teams only 11 managed to come to the competition, while the amputee football players from Nigeria could not take part because of financial difficulties. During the event, which took place from September 4 to 8, teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Croatia, The Netherlands, Greece, Great Britain and other countries competed against each other. Once again the team of Bosnia and Herzegovina won the Gold Medal in the Men's competition, while the team of The Netherlands won Gold in the Women's competition. They experienced a variety of Paralympic sports events, including Long Jump, Sitting Volleyball, Biathlon, Table Tennis, Football 5 a side and Wheelchair Basketball. In a show match the German men’s U22 wheelchair basketball team defeated the Chinese National Women’s Team and the National Team of Bosnia and Herzegowina in Sitting Volleyball managed to beat Germany two sets to one. This year, teams from Germany, Holland, England and Bosnia, including two Women's National Teams took part in the event. The Cup, originally initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, has developed over the years into one of the highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene. About 100 athletes and officials came to Jerusalem's Beit Halochem Centre for the competition, among them Badminton players from 8 countries in Europe, South America and Asia. After having competed in Jerusalem, most players went on to take part in the Rishon Lizion Tournament, held between March 27th and 29th. Nevertheless, thanks also to the strong support of the local organizers, the event - the second biggest this year after the IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup Cross Country and Biathlon in Vuokatti, Finland - got off to a good start with a great number of international teams participating. Well known tournaments like the Malmo Open, usually held in February in the Southern Swedish city of Malmo, not only attract participants from Scandinavian countries but also from around the world. Now the Swedish capital has added the Stockholm Games, which are held in and around Stockholm and also include various sports events, among them Swimming, Wheelchair Basketball and Sledge Hockey.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETOn October 7 and 8, 2006, sitting volleyball players met in Berlin for the 2006 German Sitting Volleyball Championships. After several unsuccessful attempts in the last years, the team "SV Berliner Brauereien" finally manged to beat "TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen" and is new German Sitting Volleyball Champion. Thanks to a small group of sitting volleyball enthusiasts, a new German all-women team was established in late summer and also got the chance to take part in the tournament. Therefore, for some of the participants at the German Athletics, held from August 25 to 27 in Leverkusen, the competition was the last test before this year's biggest athletics event. Among the many international participants in Leverkusen was also Paralympic top sprinter Earle Connor, who was suspended from Canada's Paralympic team shortly before the Paralympics in Athens after failing a drugs test in 2004. About 30 athletes from six nations attended the event, with France winning, Germany coming in second and Belgium third. One year later, the 2nd German Open attracted more than 300 participants from 37 countries and was held from August 16 to 20, 2006, in Wuppertal's premium event hall UNI HALLE, which is also used for music events and fully accessible for athletes with disabilities.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom June 17 to 25, 2006, the city of Roermond in the Netherlands hosted the Sitting and Standing Volleyball World Championships 2006 for athletes with a disability. The event was organized by the Dutch SPGN, a foundation that has been organizing sports events for persons with a disability for over 20 years. 28 teams from all over the world competed in Roermond, including the Standing Volleyball team of Canada, which captured their third consecutive world title.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom June 1 to 4, 2006, more than 400 swimmers with a disability from 25 nations came to Berlin for this year's German Swimming Open. The event, which was organized for the 7th time in the German capital, was the last international test before the World Championships in Durban, South Africa, in December. During the 4 days of the competition, athletes took part in 71 competitions and broke more international records than ever before in Berlin. Best German swimmers were Kirsten Bruhn of the club PSV Neumuenster, who was recently nominated for the prestigious Laureus Sports Award and Christoph Burkhard of TV Rottweil.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETOn May 20, 2006, the world's top amputee athletes met in Duderstadt, Germany, for the Paralympic Challenge 2006. The event, which was formerly known as Paralympics Revival, has long been a firm part of the international Track and Field Schedule and was last organized by the Otto Bock HealthCare division in 1999. Despite strong winds, rainy skies and rather chilly temperatures, several world records were broken, among them by Vitalis Lanshima of Nigeria, who run the men's 100 m class T 46 in a time of 11,17 seconds and April Holmes (USA) who run the 400 m in a time of 1:03,85 min. The Cup, originally initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, has developed over the years into one of the highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene. This year's competition again attracted teams from all over Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Bosnia and other countries. View photographs taken during the event.


  • Danish Swimming Open 2006, Esbjerg, Denmark

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom March 10 to March 12 swimmers with a disability from several European countries met in Esbjerg for this year's Danish Swimming Open. The competition was held in the Swommestadion Danmark, which was build in 1996 and offers a 10 lane 50 meter pool. Although the number of participating athletes was smaller than during previous competitions, the teams from Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland and of course clubs from all over Scandinavia were once again well represented in Esbjerg.

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom January 20 to 22, 2006 the 7th Double Dutch Open was held in Deventer, about an hour train ride from Rotterdam. Once again the main part of the competition was organized in the region's well-known recreation complex De Scheg, which houses various wheelchair accessible sports facilities under one roof. The Double Dutch Open, which is held biennially, has attracted both disabled and non-disabled athletes from all over Europe for more than 10 years. When the event was initiated in 1993 by the Double Dutch Open Foundation it was originally planned as a swimming competition and first organized in the year of 1994. Due to the huge success the executive committee decided to expand the tournament with the inclusion of sitting volleyball and later wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom January 13th to 15th, 2006, the city of Angouleme, near Bordeaux, welcomed swimmers with a disability from all over France, Belgium and Switzerland for this year's French Winter Swimming Open. This time the competition was held in the Nautilis centre, which is part of the city's biggest recreation complex, offering excellent conditions for swimmers with a disability. Organized in cooperation between the National Swimming Association for athletes with a disability of France and the local club Les Antilopes, the competition was also the first in a series of events which will ultimately determine the composition of the French team for the World Championships in Durban, South Africa, in November 2006 and the Paralympic Games 2008 in Beijing. Thailand, which will be hosting the next Paragames scheduled for 2007, won the medal tally, with Vietnam coming in second and Malaysia third. Most of the individual sporting events, which drew more than 1,000 disabled athletes from 11 countries, were organized at the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in the center of Manila.   • German Short Course Swimming Championships, Chemnitz, Germany

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETOn November 26 and 27 nearly 200 swimmers took part in this year's German Short Course Championships for amputee swimmers and swimmers with other disabilities, an event yearly organized in the city of Chemnitz, located in Eastern Germany. According to the event's organizers, several records were broken during the competition, including 8 world records. For some of the participants the championships in Chemnitz were the last test before they left for the United States, were they are to compete in the U.S. Paralympics Open Swimming Championships to be held from December 6 to 12 in Colorado Springs. Thanks to the enthusiasm of a small group of organizers, from October 28 to November 1, 2005, the First Junior World Championships in Sitting Volleyball were held in this small town near the capital Ljubljana, about 30 minutes drive from Brnik airport. For three days, teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Brazil, Poland, Slovenia, and Germany competed against each other, with the players from Iran returning home as new Junior World Champions. Once again it was the event site for this year's British Short Course Swimming Championships on October 22 and 23. Over 200 competitors from all over the United Kingdom took part in the competition. Among them were multiple Paralympic medallists Jim Anderson, Dave Roberts, Nyree Lewis, Sascha Kindred, Gareth Duke, Giles Long, Natalie Jones, Andrew Lindsay and Danielle Watts.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETOn September 25, about 200 wheelchair racers and handbikers went on the start for the 2005 Berlin Marathon. Paralympic athlete Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland won the women's wheelchair race in a time of 1:49:46. Her countryman Heinz Frei, who celebrated his 100th race victory, was first in the men's wheelchair race in a time of 1:28:32. Wim Decleir from Belgium won gold in the men's handbike competition in a time of 1:13:32. Andrea Eskau of Germany was first in the women's handbike race. She finished in a time of 1:15:50. More than 400 athletes from Germany, Austria, Australia, Ireland, Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates, India and other countries came to Berlin, where the competition was held at Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Stadium in the city's trendy Prenzlauer Berg district. Among the many participants were Paralympic world class sprinters Amy Winters and Wojtek Czyz, who won three Gold medals during the Paralympic Games in Athens. Athletes from all over Spain and other Southern European countries came to the Andalusian city of Cordoba, where the competition was held in the swimming center on the campus of the University of Cordoba, located on the outskirts of the city. Among the many participants was Spain's most famous amputee swimmer Xavier Torres, who has been one of the world's top Paralympic swimmers for a number of years.     Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFrom June 21 to June 25, teams from all over Europe came to Germany for the 2005 European Championships in Sitting Volleyball. Twelve men's and five women's teams competed in the Wilhelm-Dopatka-Halle in Leverkusen. After beating Germany in the Men's Finals, the team from Bosnia-Herzegovina once again proved to be the best Sitting Volleyball team on the European Continent. They competed in 4 sports categories: Athletics, Swimming, Track Cycling and Wheelchair Basketball. South African amputee swimmer Natalie Du Toit was the star of the swimming competition, breaking four world records and winning three gold medals. This time she also claimed victory in the S9 100m backstroke - the gold medal she missed during the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. View photographs taken during the event.

The Cup, originally initiated in 1989 by the ambitious young Hamburg team with the help of Siemens AG, has developed over the years into one of the highlights on the international disabled volleyball scene. This year's competition again attracted teams from all over Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway and other countries. In a dramatic final between the strong Bosnian team IOK Zavidovici and the German team Berliner Brauereien - the Berliners finally prevailed and won this year's Werner von Siemens Cup.   • Disabled Skiing European Cup 2005, Achenkirch, Austria

    Photo Steffen Berk, TALBRONSTEIN.NETFor most skiers with a disability the European Cup in Achenkirch, Austria, held from April 7 to April 10, 2005 in Tyrol's ski resort Christlum, high up in the mountains near lake Achensee, meant the end of the 2004/05 season. Once again, the Austrian Disabled Ski team finished as the most successful one, with 1700 points ahead of the other participating nations. Although the organizers did an incredible job with providing nearly equal conditions for all participants during the first racing days - despite rising temperatures and melting snow - the slalom, planned for April 9, had to be canceled.
