Narrative

The JF&CS SibShops respond to the isolation that siblings of children with disabilities often experience. These children frequently feel forgotten or overshadowed due to their siblings’ intensive needs, and many take on caregiving responsibilities at a very young age. Others struggle with feelings of embarrassment, guilt, and resentment toward their sibling with special needs. SibShops allows “sibs” to express these feelings in a safe and supportive environment. The opportunity to socialize with other “sibs” who have similar experiences is a great gift to SibShops participants, helping them feel less alone. While SibShops do not provide formal therapy, the group discussions and comradery offer participants much-needed emotional support. SibShops leaders also help participants recognize the strengths in their sisters and brothers with special needs, resulting in stronger relationships between siblings, which can reduce conflict and stress at home. By providing siblings of children with special needs with tailored support and recreational opportunities, SibShops often improve the overall family dynamic. Each three-hour SibShops, once a month session will include a group activity – such as bowling, mini-golf, or art projects – in addition to time to talk about the challenges and joys of growing up with a sibling with special needs

Siblings will meet one Sunday a month, 2-5:00 pm.  Drop off and pick up at the Newton JCC, 333 Nahanton Street, Newton, MA. Preregistration is required before participation. To register, contact Angela Waring (see above for contact information)

Thanks to a generous donation from the HALO Foundation, there is no cost for JF&CS Sibshops. Please visit www.halo.org for more information about the HALO Foundation.

The group follows the Don Meyer national Sibshops model.  Please visit www.siblingsuppport.org for more information on Don Meyer and the Sibshop national model.
