Narrative

Advances Learning Center provides social skills clubs for children between the ages of 3 and 16 who have social skills deficits.  Many have diagnoses such as NLD, Asperger’s, High-Functioning Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or communication disorders.

Children are grouped by age, skill level and goals, and attend a 2-hour social skills club every week.  Each club consists of four to five children and is facilitated by a club leader and an assistant.

Advances clubs use Applied Behavior Analysis(ABA) to directly teach functional social skills and increase the ease with which children interact with others.  There are groups for children of all ability levels; Advances groups teach everything from beginning skills such as appropriate toy-play and turn-taking to complex concepts such as perspective-taking and theory of mind.  Skills to be targeted are determined individually for each child during the intake and placement process.

Skills are taught and practiced through the use of games and activities, including video-taped role-play, musical games, creative building projects, pretend play, team-building activities, and structured games.  Each child’s individual interests are taken into account when developing lesson plans.  Our curriculum and methods are informed by research; we use task analysis, systematically faded prompts, and other teaching tactics associated with Applied Behavior Analysis. All clubs are headed by an experienced ABA therapist and are supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

We offer clubs on a semesterly basis; we provide two 16-week semesters (fall and spring) and one 7-week semester in the summer.  Please contact us if you are interested in having your child attend a social skills group at Advances.
