Mitochondrial disease is a disorder of energy production. Mitochondrial disease can manifest as any disease in any organ at any age. The mitochondria are present in almost every cell in our bodies. Defective mitochondria are unable to completely burn food and oxygen in order to generate energy. MitoAction has more information.
