Organization Narrative
The Older Americans Act requires that all older persons and their caregivers have reasonable, convenient and direct access to free or very low cost information & referral services.The role of these services should be to help callers identify, understand, and effectively use the programs that comprise the human delivery system.
The Elder Affairs’ Information and Referral (I&R) Unit is responsible for answering the 1-800-AGE INFO telephone line and providing referrals and information on the myriad of services for elders and their caregivers in Massachusetts.
The MassOptions I&R unit manages approximately 800-1000 calls per month and can assist elders and caregivers with obtaining information about health insurance counseling, caregiver services, service complaints, or finding a nursing facility or rest home. They may also advocate on behalf of those who need special support.
The Community Care Ombudsman Program is a free program which assists elders 60 years old or over who are having problems with the health or social services they are receiving in their home or community. These services include home health care, homemaker services, and adult day care. Also, any medical, functional or support services provided to an elder in home or managed care. Assists elders and their families by investigating and resolving their complaints and concerns. Program provides education, referral and when appropriate mediation in these consumer disputes.
