Narrative

Adult Family Care (AFC) is a Medicaid-funded program. It provides a tax-free stipend, paid respite time and ongoing support to caregivers of frail elders, adults with disabilities or adults with mental health challenges. The individual receiving care must require, at minimum, daily cueing and supervision with at least one aspect of personal care. 

Participant Eligibility:

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Must be unable to live alone because of a medical or mental condition
  • Must require daily assistance with one or more activity of daily living (ADL)
  • Cannot require full-time skilled nursing care
  • Must be willing to live with the caregiver
  • Must be eligible for Masshealth Standard or Common Health

 Caregiver Eligibility:

  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Must be able to devote appropriate time to provide care and ensure the participant's safety
  • Caregiver may be a family member or a non-family member; however, the caregiver cannot be the spouse
  • May be a parent but not the legal guardian (One parent may continue with guardianship)
  • Must live with the participant in a private residence
  • Caregiver will need to be approved for the program (interview, references, and CORI check)
