Narrative

Adult Family/Foster Care (AFC) is a Mass Health funded program providing a monthly stipend and support to caregivers who provide assistance to their loved one with IDD, including Autism, or any other physical, or cognitive disability. AFC is done in a personalized home setting.

This program allows people who require help with activities of daily living to maintain their dignity and pursue typical life routines. They get individualized assistance from a family caregiver. Eligible recipients of this program must be at least 16 years of age, receive Mass Health Insurance, either Standard or CommonHealth, and require assistance with completing ADL  tasks on a daily basis. Adult Family/Foster Care (AFC) recipients must require assistance in at least one of the following areas:

  • mobility in or outside of their home (standing, moving, walking)
  • bathing
  • dressing
  • toileting
  • eating
  • transferring

A registered nurse and care manager will conduct an assessment to determine eligibility. The program is for people who need daily help with personal care/ADLs, but want to live in a family setting rather than in another facility. The caregiver provides meals, companionship, personal care assistance, and 24-hour supervision.

The Arc of the South Shore's program serves families in many communities on the South Shore .
