Narrative

Self advocacy empowers people to be assertive and speak up when faced with walls to independent living goals.  Self advocacy means knowing what you want, and knowing how to reach your personal goals.

MWCIL actively educates people in advocacy methods. People are encouraged to take direct roles in advocating for their own issues as well as the issues of others. MWCIL trains people how to contact public officials and present their issues in writing, over the telephone and by appointment.

With access to the MWCIL database of state and federal officials’ contact information combined with educational materials and training on effective letter/email writing, and phone calling, people have the tools they need to effect change.

MWCIL also will support a person's rights in their community. We can help by nelp with filing complaints and taking action as needed to remove illegal barriers or obtain services.
