Narrative
Founded in 1981, Centro Presente is a member-driven, statewide Latin American immigrant organization dedicated to the self-determination and self-sufficiency of the Latin American immigrant community of Massachusetts. Operated and led primarily by Central American immigrants, Centro Presente struggles for immigrant rights and for economic and social justice. Through the integration of community organizing, leadership development and basic services, Centro Presente strives to give our members voice and build community power. Currently Centro Presente offers four programs and services in the following areas: (1) Legal Immigration Services (LIS), which assists over 4,000 Latino immigrants each year with processes such as work permit renewals, asylum case maintenance services and family petitions; (2) Pintamos Nuestro Mundo/We Paint Our World (PNM) -- a free arts and leadership development After school program for Latino immigrant youth; (3) Education for Empowerment (EFE) -- our adult literacy program that offers four different classes: three levels of English Speakers for Other Languages, Basic Literacy, US Citizenship, and Computer Literacy.
