Narrative

Extending the collaborative features of SharePoint to blind, visually and cognitively impaired workers.

Blind and visually impaired SharePoint users may find it difficult to access information as efficiently as their sighted co-workers. It limits both their productivity and their careers. Discover 508 is the only Section 508 related software designed to provide visually impaired SharePoint users with an experience comparable to that of sighted users.

Despite Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requiring agencies to offer comparable accessibility and usability for blind or visually impaired workers, those who use SharePoint face challenges navigating within SharePoint and accessing information necessary for daily tasks. To remedy this, Discover Technologies has developed the revolutionary Discover 508 Usability Mode for use with SharePoint and SharePoint Online (O-365). This technology offers enhanced Section 508 compliance not accomplished through content remediation, by modifying existing SharePoint architecture and navigation to make it more intuitive, easier to use and making it accessible on mobile devices.

Once activated for a particular user, Discover 508 for SharePoint or SharePoint Online automatically redirects them into the appropriate “usability mode” for simplified navigation. In O-365, this mode uses SharePoint Online’s app-model framework to create acceptable pages without changing the visual design for sighted workers. It allows users to access and edit lists, libraries and documents; discussion boards; calendar events; SharePoint hierarchy; alerts and permissions and the recycle bin.
