Respite Services are typically funded by State agencies such as DDS, DMH and DCF. TREK (Teaching, Reaching, Experiencing with Kids) our Adventure-based, Experiential Learning program is als0o funded by those state agencies, but we at tmes have scholarships and grant dollars to support programming for non-system involved youth.

LUK provides two types of Hourly Respite services:

  • Home-based Respite: A trained respite worker comes to the family’s home on a specified day and time and provides the services in the family’s home
  • Community-Based Respite: A trained respite worker comes to the family’s home on a specified day and time and takes the child/youth and his/her siblings into the local community to do an activity 

LUK's Adaptive Adventure-based program (Teaching, Reaching, Experiencing with Kids) is TREK- Synergy

TREK, like all of LUK’s youth programming, is rooted on the principles of positive youth development (PYD). PYD equips youth with attributes, skills, competencies, and values that contribute to future success as healthy, productive adults. At LUK, we believe that youth have strengths, and that partnership between youth and adults in the design, development, and delivery of services results in better service provision.

Synergy is informed by research, consumer/stakeholder feedback, and over eight years of experience providing this service to youth with Autism. This adaptive adventure-based, experiential-learning (AB/EL) program uses motivating activities to help shape and reinforce behavioral changes. We enhance a youth’s (and their family’s) worldview, broaden and deepen ties to the community and to each other, provide pro-social opportunities and, through carefully designed, scaffolded activities, introduce new experiences to participants in a way that is progressive (but not aggressive) and helps push people outside the comfort zone. During our first cycle, we received overwhelming feedback that youth demonstrated increased verbal communication, reciprocity, social skills, and established friendships with other group members, in addition to increased physical activity.

Prior to enrollment, each youth and family completes a thorough intake process. TREK leadership explores each youth’s likes, dislikes, sensory integration issues, sensorimotor problems, dietary concerns/restrictions, medical conditions, behaviors (including precedent and antecedent), and other information important to planning activities. General goals are established, as well as child specific goals such as working on balance and fine motor skills. A behavior plan is developed in conjunction with the parent, as well as a “kid at a glance” fact sheet that is provided to all program staff. The intake process is an opportunity for parents to gain a level of comfort with programming, as this is often the first time that a child has gone into the community without their parent/guardian.
