Friendship Works Medical Escort Program

Many elders living in Boston miss medical appointments because they have no companion to provide physical assistance and emotional support. We recruit and train volunteers to accompany elders to medical appointments. Our escorts provide personalized support, remain with elders throughout the entire visit to help them navigate confusing medical centers, and provide caring companionship during medical visits. FriendshipWorks also provides volunteer escort and assistance for people needing help with non-medical errands and tasks through our Friendly Helping program.

Our Jamaica Plain office, La Cadena de Amistad, offers a bilingual, culturally sensitive variation of our Medical Escort, Friendly Visitor, and Friendly Helping services. Our volunteers are able to help Latino elders bridge language and culture gaps and effectively access the health care system.

FriendshipWorks stands out in the elder services sector for provision of care that is informal, provided free of charge by caring volunteers, grounded in an ethic of neighbors helping neighbors and befriending.

Please note this is NOT a transportation service. FriendshipWorks services are offered to people above the age of 60 in Boston, Brookline and Newton.
