Narrative

MHLAC provides legal and policy advocacy for people with mental health challenges throughout Massachusetts. A State agency, its central priority is to address those concerns that are most closely related to people's ability to live full and independent lives. Like other legal services offices, this includes combating poverty. Poverty is often characterized as a “social determinant” of mental illness. When people are put in institutional settings, MHLAC seeks to protect them from abusive treatment that can often wreak permanent damage.

An independent state agency of the Supreme Judicial Court. Advice and legal representation on treatment rights, custody and visitation matters, guardianship abuse, insurance discrimination, educational rights, housing bias, and mistreatment. (Intake: M-W-F, 8:30-1:00).
