Narrative

The North Shore Health Project was founded in 1988 by a group of men and women from Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts, who were concerned about the lack of available services for people affected by HIV and AIDS. The North Shore Health Project provides a variety of holistic services, as an adjunct to primary care, in addition to an array of support services. Since 2003 the Health Project has provided a full array of services to all those living with Hepatitis C. Although it has been providing free care for almost 20 years, The Project has retained a grass-roots character. Volunteer health care practitioners provide all holistic services, joined by a small army of other volunteers who assist with the day-to-day operation of the agency. Holistic services include massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, reiki, polarity, reflexology, and energy healing. Meditation, yoga and art classes are also occasionally offered. Support services include a drop-in center with a supportive milieu of clients, staff, and volunteers; case management provided by staff; a twice weekly congregate lunch program which provides social support as well as nutrition; support groups; an emergency fund; a holiday fund; and a free clothing boutique.
