Self-Determination Project (SDP) – Developed at Bay Cove in 2000, this innovative residential support project for high-functioning individuals with developmental disabilities assists individuals who have chosen to have full control over the type of support they receive, the persons providing this support and the funds used to pay for this support. The thrust of this project is to facilitate each individual's skills to identify and realize his or her own life circumstances. The concept of “self determination” (or "self direction") is embraced by Bay Cove and fully supported by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Individuals are enrolled in a Participant Directed Program (PDP) at DDS. The support people hired by the original individuals are employees of Bay Cove. Bay Cove uses Department of Developmental Services resources for posting positions, providing benefits, covering weekly paychecks and maintaining of a payroll system.
Bay Cove also provides staff oversight of the Self-Determination process, along with the individuals and DDS Service Coordinators. SDP staff also assist with a social-recreation project that was started in collaboration with DDS. New admissions are arranged through DDS. Applicants already involved in a Participant Directed Program can request support from Bay Cove under this Self-Determination project.
