Narrative

Supported by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Shared Living is when a person with disabilities (PwD) lives with a non-disabled person. The non-disabled person  has accepted contractual responsibility for the well-being of the PwD.

It’s a person-centered model. It allows people with disabilities (PwD) to live in an approved home within the community. They receive care and support from a reliable, qualified person. Caregiver will be consistent each day. They give continuity of care.

Cushing recruits, screens, trains, and delivers ongoing support to caregivers who meet the needs of the PwD. Caregivers receive ongoing:

  • financial (pay)
  • behavioral support
  • nursing support

Through a shared living experience, Cushing has found that having one consistent care provider deepens the relationship between two people. It strengthens access to the greater community.
