Narrative

CBI's Universal Access Sailing Program: The CBI Universal Access Program (UAP) is open to any participant who needs special attention or assistance in going sailing and their families, guests or staff. By partnering with the Executive Office of Private Public Partnerships, the Department of Conservation and Recreation UAP, and Genzyme Corporation, we are fortunate to offer this specialized programming and adapted equipment to enhance our mission of "Sailing for All." The success of this program graduates from years of collective efforts between the OPPP, DCRUAP and CBI to make this a possibility here. In 2006, funding was obtained to build the adapted boats and equipment and to plan the programming.

In the Universal Access Program, persons with disabilities and their guests have the use of specialized, accessible sailboats and transfer equipment, dedicated staff assistance to get in and out of the boats, and sailing instruction, all for only $50.00 for the entire season! A discount to $1.00 is available to anyone in financial need. Several seat configurations in the boats are available for people with various disabilities. Reserved sessions, approximately an 1 hour 15 minutes in length, can be customized to meet individual needs and can consist of a short sailboat ride for therapeutic recreation or a more learn-to-sail class structure, leading to ratings and expanded sailing privileges. The sailboats used in this program are custom-modified 15-foot keel Mercurys, 23-foot Sonars, and RS Ventures. The boats have been adapted with contoured and supportive seating as well as higher booms so people do not have to move from side-to-side when the boat turns. The modified Mercury has also been fitted with special rigging so that all control lines lead to a central console with steering wheel. In addition the boats used in this program are extremely stable and safe because of added ballast.
