Narrative

UNOS assists the transplant community and the patients it serves in a number of ways:

• managing the national transplant waiting list, matching donors to recipients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
• monitoring every organ match to ensure that organ allocation policies are followed
• bringing together OPTN members to develop policies that make the best use of the limited supply of organs and give all patients a fair chance at getting the organ they need based on medical criteria—regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, religion, lifestyle, financial, or social status
• maintaining the database that contains all organ transplant data for every transplant that occurs in the U.S. These data are used to improve transplantation, develop organ-sharing policies, support patient care, and help patients make informed health care choices
• providing patient-focused information for transplant candidates and their loved ones
• educating professional groups about their important role in the donation process
